Pavers and popular ones including their own benefits and drawbacks
First thing to keep in mind is that your patio needs to look gentle, but has to be hard-wearing. Gravel is the first option that comes in mind. However, there are various sorts of gravel available and can be laid in a number of ways. It is a globally used substance but uses and types vary enormously.
Examples
By way of example, soft-looking inexpensive paths, which can handle wheelchairs, can be made from mixing small-sized gravel with sandy soil and dry cement. The airbases in Germany and streets in the US were made from cement and soil.
After the soil was cultivated, water and dry cement was mixed, evenly distributed and the surface was raked smooth. It took a week to get this road. These roads were like soil color but hard without dust.
Types of gravel for patio
These never go like the ordinary loose gravel but are fine, textured and include clay together with the gravel. On a hardcore base, generally 50 mm in-depth, self binding gravel is spread evenly. A heavy roller is rolled on it, while water is hosed over the roller-wheels to solidify it. Water attracts clay on the surface and seals it.
Bicycles, wheelchairs can be used over self binding gravels without causing any damages. It looks attractive and several people love it, but a few don’t, because walking on the gravel from dirt leaves ground particles over it that are hard to remove. Moreover, pulling the weeds can break its surface.
Fixed gravel
To disguise a concrete or tarmac area, you can make use of fixed gravel technique. A solution is sprayed on the concrete and 2 to 3 thin layers of gravel are rolled onto it. You get to choose different kinds and colours of gravel. It looks just like loose gravel, but is strong and does not look charming. When used in confined space for vehicle use can erode the gravel and tarmac or concrete surface gets exposed. It needs re-doing in every few years, in case of heavy usage.
It is popular option and is completely immovable and mended with clear resin. Resin bonded gravel could be put on slopes and driven on surfaces. It looks so pristine but for many people it lacks organic feel. Additionally, it is extremely pricey.
Gravel stabilizer grids
If you desire loose gravel on slopes and desire to use that area for wheels, bikes and high heels, then add a network of hexagons. This honeycomb grid is available in two sizes and made from recycled material. The hexagonal cells are designed to be filled with decorative gravel or aggregate.
Geo-textile membrane is bonded thermally to every sheets underside. These honeycomb sheets are weed-resistant and water permeable. This hexagonal cell structure looks just like a honeycomb except this synthetic honeycomb is generated from polypropylene material, which has comprehensive strength of over 200 tonnes/sq m.
